Job Description

Responsible for managing/supervising the wildland aerial firefighters/helicopter pilots in support of wildfire aviation operations.
Coordinates the activities of as many as eleven (11) wildfire helicopter pilots. Works with internal and external managers and staff:
Aviation Manager, Emergency Operations Manager, interagency aviation program coordinators, and inspectors.
Responsible for ensuring the overall helicopter program meets the department standards and qualifications for interagency certifications and that the helicopter pilot positions are adequately staffed, trained and deployed to effectively suppress wildland fires.
Position operates with a high degree of independence. May participate as a wildfire pilot in suppression activities.

Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess and maintain a current FAA Commercial Helicopter Pilot License.
Must possess and maintain a current valid FAA Certified Flight Instructor Rating – Helicopter.
Must possess and maintain a current valid FAA Class II Medical Certificate.
Must possess a minimum of 1,500 hours total helicopter flight time.
Must possess a minimum of 500 hours total turbine helicopter flight time.
Must possess a minimum of 100 hours PIC helicopter last 12 months.
Must possess a minimum of 200 hours mountain time.
Must maintain area permit(s), licenses, certifications, etc. required for performance of assigned tasks.
Must have a working knowledge of Safety Management System principles.
Experience developing and implementing aviation training plans.
Strong oral, written and interpersonal skills.
Thorough knowledge of all principles governing the operation and flight of rotary wing aircraft.
Must have a working knowledge of current FAA and Interagency Helicopters Operations Guide (IHOG) rules and regulations governing the operation and maintenance of assigned aircraft.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
College Degree, or equivalent.
At least 3 years' experience in the last 6 years, as a helicopter pilot, certified to conduct external load (water bucket or sling load) operations, internal and external load/cargo operations, passenger transport, reconnaissance and vertical reference (Longline) operations.
At least 3 years' experience as Pilot-In-Charge (PIC) of an aircraft similar in category and class to the aircrafts (UH-1H) used in the types of operations being conducted by Fire Aviation Unit.
Proficiency with 75' – 150' Longline (emphasis on proficiency).
50 hours of Bell UH-1H flight time preferred.
Experience in operating Type 2 helicopters in wildland firefighting in mountainous terrain.

Qualified under the ICS system as a firefighter (FFT2), advanced firefighter/squad boss (FFT1) or other operational JCS positions.
Bell UH-1H maintenance test pilot training. Factory maintenance test pilot training.

Experience working in and around a helicopter maintenance facility. Being able to work around and with agency helicopter maintenance personnel.
Ability to work closely with fire aviation program manager, maintenance supervisor, helicopter coordinator, pilots, mechanics, helitack members and all other agency personnel as required.
Able to function as a professional liaison with allied agencies such as but not limited to; FAA, USFS, DOI, BLM, BIA, NPS, NOAA, USFW, and local city, county, state and federal governments.

Candidates with the following qualifications will be given preference: 2,500 hours or more single engine medium helicopter PIC ATP-H, 1,000 hours turbine helicopter time, helicopter instrument rating, 100 hours or more actual IFR PIC, 24 months or more Part 135 experience and/or aerial firefighting experience in turbine helicopters, recent operational firefighting flight experience, prior Bell UH-1H experience and simulator training, helicopter maintenance test flying training/school, experience flying in the Pacific Northwest area, Bell factory training.
