Job Description

The Fairfax County Police Department, Helicopter Division, seeks an experienced pilot to fly their Bell 429 GlobalRanger. The position requires working rotating day and night shifts, weekends and holidays. Operates a twin-engine turbine rotor-wing aircraft in varying weather conditions, performing Instrument Flying Rules (IFR) operations when necessary. Performs additional duties as assigned by the Division Commander and/or Chief Pilot. Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs all flight operations in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations and in adherence with all pertinent divisional and departmental standard operating procedures;
  • Support law enforcement patrol, and investigative efforts;
  • Assist special operations and tactical teams, K-9, patrol, search and rescue;
  • Conduct aerial search and surveillance;
  • Flies aerial surveillance, crime detection and crime prevention missions;
  • Provide aviation support during regional emergencies and natural disasters;
  • Assist with dignitary protection when necessary;
  • Provide community relations through the use of static aircraft displays;
  • Transports critical trauma patients to local hospitals;
  • Participates in rescue operations;
  • Performs routine daily maintenance of aircraft and equipment;
  • Completes and files unit reports and aircraft logs.

Job Requirements


Graduation from high school or a GED issued by a state department of education; must have completed at least 1500 hours of helicopter pilot-in-command, 100 hours of unaided night flights, 300 hours of helicopter pilot-in-command experience in the last five years or 100 hours of pilot-in-command experience in the last 12 months.


  • Combination of 2500+ hours as helicopter pilot-in-command, unaided night flights;
  • Seven years of experience as a helicopter pilot;
  • Night Vision Goggle (NVG) training and experience;
  • Flight Instructor Certificate.

Possession of a valid FAA commercial rotor craft certificate with instrument rating;
Possession of a valid FAA Class II (or higher) medical certificate;
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation and pre-hire medical evaluation to the satisfaction of employer. Applicants must be able to produce valid documents of completed flight hours (log books), flight training and certificates/licenses at the time of scheduled interview. No prior flight or personnel violations and/or adverse actions from the FAA, military or a previous employer.

This position requires one to be able to sit, walk, bend, stand, and lift up to 25 pounds, use a keyboard, and visual acuity for night flights with or without reasonable accommodations.
