Special Assignment
This position involves piloting of the CCSO Aviation Division
helicopters in support of law enforcement, aerial firefighting, long line

rescue and mosquito abatement. Position incumbent interfaces with federal and

state and local agencies on matters concerning aviation issues. Assist direct

supervisor to develop operation plans and to coordinate with outside agencies.

Assignments are received in the form of broad policy statements. They must be
capable of working as part of a two-man team or solo in the dynamic low

altitude environment. They must be able to operate in day, night, NVG and IMC

conditions. They must also be well versed in the law enforcement part of the

mission, operating highly specialized observation, tracking, navigation, and
communications equipment. They are primarily responsible for acting as

Pilot-in-Command on all assigned missions. Work is performed under direction of

the Aviation Division Commander. Performance is reviewed through conferences

and written reports. This position is considered essential under the CCSO
Emergency Plan.


Examples of Duties

·All functions of a Deputy Sheriff

·Performs scheduled routine inspection

·Performs flying assignments in a fixed-wing aircraft and
helicopters.

·Provides air support to ground units and assists other
agencies.

·Completes and files unit reports and aircraft logs.

·Conducts public presentations.

·Performs other related work as required.

·Assist with maintenance as needed

·Conduct County flights including firefighting, long-line rescue
and Mosquito Control aerial missions

·Ability to fly fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.

·Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of
helicopter aviation.

·Possess strong interpersonal skills.

·Ability to work respectfully and collaboratively with

others.

·Ability to successfully complete the law enforcement

academy within 1 year of hire.

·Ability to obtain the public health aerial applicator

license within 1 year of hire.

·Ability and experience operating all equipment listed in
the EQUIPMENT USED section.

·Knowledge and skill in Instrument flight techniques.

·Ability to use sound judgment under hazardous and stressful
work conditions.

·Keen sense of observation Skilled in interpreting aviation
weather reports

·Knowledge of communications codes, signals and unit

identification.

·Ability to maintain accurate records.

·Knowledge of Office rules and regulations.

·Knowledge of the geography of the County.

Education or Equivalent Experience
Specific hour requirements may be waved for the right
applicant.

·High school diploma or GED. Prefer four (4) year degree
from accredited college or university with degree in related field.
·One thousand two hundred (1200) hours of pilot-in-command

experience in rotor wing Fifty (25) hours actual or simulated instrument time
in rotor wing and fixed wing.

·One hundred (100) hours low-level flight experience.

·Twelve hundred (1200) rotor wing turbine hours.

·Fifty (50) hours Bambi Bucket, long line or fire-fighting
experience.

·Five hundred (500) hours of experience at night with Night
Vision Goggles (NVG).

·Prior Military aviation experience preferred.

·One hundred (100) aerial application flight experience.
·Day and night off airport and confined area landing

experience is strongly preferred.

·Able to work nights and on call status when off duty.

·Possession of a valid FAA commercial rotorcraft and

airplane Single Engine land certificate with instrument rating.
·Possession of a valid FAA Class II (or higher) medical
certificate.

·Possession of valid Florida driver’s license within 20 days
of acceptance.

·Florida Law Enforcement Certification (or ability to attain
Certification and completion field training).

·Must pass a proficiently check flight conducted by the
Chief Pilot.

·Internal agency applicants must not be on disciplinary or
performance probation.

Physical Assessment

Passed a physical examination by a licenses physician,

physician assistant, or certified advanced registered nurse practitioner that

has certified by signature on this job description that the member is fit to

perform the duties as described. The Office requires that all applicants for certified
positions undergo a physical ability test. As part of their pre-screening
process, applicants are required to pass the physical abilities test. The
Physical Ability Testing, (P.A.T), test is designed to assess physical

attributes essential to job related functions of law enforcement and detention
officers.


Physical Effort Required

Class II FAA flight physical Traveling by car or aircraft

for meetings/conferences and programs which are held the majority of the time
week night and week end hours. Must be able to physically perform the basic
life operational functions of standing, walking, hearing, and kneeling,
reaching, feeling, grasping, pushing, pulling, bending, climbing, crawling,
fingering, and performing repetitive motions. Must be able to perform work
pushing/pulling/grappling of persons or objects up to 150 pounds of force
occasionally, 20 pounds frequently (uniform vest, belt), and 10 pounds
constantly. Must possess the visual acuity to operate an office assigned

vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing people, places,

or things on patrol 24/7. (Sunrise, day, sunset, night hour driving)

Working Conditions

The cockpit is cramped quarters and can be very cold in the
winter and warm in the summer. Work near potentially dangerous mechanical

equipment. Must be able to tolerate loud noises and vibrations. Work an on-call

status and work may require shift work, flexible hours, days and holidays which

may include nights and weekends. May require acts of physical endurance. Work during
inclement weather.
