Overview

This position performs as a scheduled pilot for the District’s Aeromedical Program. The pilot is responsible for certification, currency, and safe and efficient operation of the District Air Ambulance Helicopter pursuant to applicable Federal Aviation Regulations, Florida Statutes and Administrative Code, Health Care District General Operations Manual, Operations Specifications and Aeromedical Program policies and procedures. This position assists the Director of Aviation Operations with the operational aspects of the program as assigned. Persons in this position may be asked to rotate into the Chief Pilot or Instructor positions, or perform other functions as qualified at the discretion of the Director of Aviation Operations.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Supervises the flight crew members in safety and proper operation of the Aeromedical Helicopter.
  • Maintains final authority regarding initiation, redirection or cancellation of a flight based on safety considerations.
  • Authorized tactical operational authority regarding flight and deviation requests based on Federal Aviation Regulations, Operational Specifications and the District’s General Operations Manual.
  • Represents the District Aeromedical Program during public education presentations and demonstrations.
  • Assumes Pilot in Command (PIC) responsibilities for the District Aeromedical program as scheduled.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable Federal Aviation Regulations, Florida Statutes and Administrative Code, Health Care District General Operations Manual, and District Aeromedical policies and procedures.
  • Assists in development and implementation of air medical operational procedures.
  • Assists in formulating and implementing helicopter air medical safety and training procedures.
  • Conducts passenger briefings, ground and aviation safety orientation and drills.
  • Maintains currency with the department read file and aeromedical library.
  • Monitors individual training requirements and updates the Director of Aviation Operations of pending deficiencies.
  • Updates applicable manuals upon receipt of changes.
  • Reports any program, aircraft, facility, or regulation discrepancy to the Director of Aviation Operations.
  • Reviews aircraft flight logs, maintenance inspection schedule, Discrepancy Reports and the computer maintenance tracking log for maintenance requirements before each flight.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Maintenance and the Director of Aviation Operations regarding the repair of discrepancies and completion of aircraft inspections or other maintenance.
  • Plans flight assignments considering purpose, altitude, terrain, weather, range, weight and balance, airport facilities, landing area, navigational aids, crew, patients/passengers and utilizes the District risk assessment procedure.
  • Prepares a load manifest per District policy at the beginning of each scheduled flight assignment and enters flight information into the TH135 computer program as required prior to and at the completion of each flight.
  • Monitors weather conditions and aircraft status affecting flight operations during their duty assignment.
  • Ensures and assists with cleaning the aircraft.
  • Performs an aircraft preflight inspection in accordance with the Rotorcraft Flight Manual.
  • Completes maintenance procedural checks, calculates results and records the data appropriately
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Aviation Operations.
  • Communicates effectively with medical personnel by answering questions or reviewing a flight with the crewmembers before or after a mission is complete.
  • Communicates effectively with off-going or on-coming duty pilot and flight crew to ensure that all pertinent information about the aircraft, weather, or potential flights is provided during the shift change briefing.
  • Communicates effectively with ground personnel at scenes and with hospital security to maintain safe landings and takeoffs, as well as security of the aircraft while on the ground.
  • Reports any change in hospital landing sites or any new obstacles noted along a route of travel.
  • Makes recommendations for improvement in quality to the Director of Aviation Operations and participates in data collection or other activities that may be required for the quality improvement program.
  • Attends meetings as requested by the Director of Aviation Operations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and participates in training in survival techniques and equipment, ditching, and role in the Post Accident/Incident Plan.
  • May rotate responsibilities as Chief Pilot as follows;
  • Perform, review, and provide oversight of flight crewmembers.
  • Direct training activities.
  • Assists the Director of Aviation Operations in formulating/coordinating policies and procedures.
  • Advise the Director of Aviation Operations on status of operations/training.
  • Assists in preparation and updates of the pilot duty schedule.
  • Reviews reports/correspondence regarding flight operations.
  • Coordinates and performs duties within the Safety Management System.
  • Maintains reference library, flight planning publications, checklists, operations and flight manuals.
  • Reviews pilots’ flight and planning techniques to ensure operational standardization.
  • Oversees compliance with FAA regulations.
  • Evaluates and updates training program.
  • Develops and performs training in accordance with the District’s approved program.
  • Coordinates and performs ground provider and communicator training.
  • Maintains company flight instructor status.
  • Performs flight and ground training in accordance with the Helicopter Training Manual.
  • Ensures the maintenance of all training records and files.
  • Conducts public education presentations.
  • Performs relief pilot duties as assigned.

Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in Red Cross shelters or to perform
other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience:

  • Aircraft flying experience shall include a minimum 2,000 total flight hours; including at least 1,500 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) in helicopters, which shall include a minimum of 500 hours cross country, 250 hours night flight, of which 50 must have been cross country, and 75 hours of actual or simulated instrument time at least 50 hours of which were in actual flight

Certification:

  • Commercial Pilot with Instrument endorsement required or Airline Transport Pilot not limited to VFR.

Licensure:

  • Valid Florida driver’s license required within six months of hire.
