Job Description:

The Chief Pilot must meet Part 135 Line Pilot criteria in addition to leadership responsibilities. Line pilots operate with the highest regard for safety, compliance, and customer service. This role is critical in ensuring each flight is conducted in full compliance of all applicable FAA regulations, aircraft limitations, and company procedures. Pilot in Command is responsible to monitor the loading of cargo and ensure a comprehensive preflight and weight & balance is accomplished before each flight. Duties and assignments may overlap depending on the operational needs of the department.

Responsibilities

  • The PIC is responsible for meeting basic qualifications and completion of Company Training Manual requirements 9.4 PIC qualification prior to designation of Pilot in Command.
  • The PIC assigned to any flight is charged with the responsibility of operating the aircraft within the applicable Federal Aviation Regulations, company operating procedures, operations specifications, and the operating limitations of that aircraft as provided in the approved RFM.
  • May delegate certain duties but retains overall responsibility.
  • Conduct or supervise the flight planning IAW this manual and FAR requirements.
  • Fuel requirements will be planned to ensure that each flight is initiated with the appropriate fuel loading as specified in FAR 135.209(b) and Section 12 of this Manual.
  • Obtain and become thoroughly familiarized with en route, destination and alternate weather forecast prior to flight. This will include NOTAMS, PIREPS, and any other available information concerning the flight. PIREPS may be obtained en route from other tour aircraft or FSS.
  • Conduct airworthiness check prior to flight, and ensure that the flight logs, records, maintenance forms, and load manifests are properly completed and maintained when assigned an aircraft.
  • Supervise the proper loading and securing of cargo and determine that the aircraft is loaded within center of gravity limitations and does not exceed maximum gross weight or center of gravity limitations for takeoff and landing.
  • Brief passengers as specified in this manual and FAR 135.117 and, prior to takeoff, assign a crewmember or passenger to assist handicapped persons in the case of emergency evacuation.
  • Upon departure/arrival from established bases of operation pilots will contact base personnel by radio and announce their departure/arrival and current fuel state.
  • Conduct flights at favorable altitude taking into account turbulence, oxygen requirements and comfort of passengers during flight.
  • Responsible for obtaining personal flight schedule and maintaining flight and duty limitations, as well as getting adequate rest and being mentally prepared for flight. Keep all required certificates current (including Commercial Airman’s certificate and Medical Certificate) and have them in their personal possession. Management personnel shall be notified of any scheduling conflicts or other problems that may affect the pilot’s job performance.
  • Complete the Pilot Risk Assessment worksheet from the safety manual and submit at the beginning of each fly day.
  • Communicate with the FAA in performance of their duties
  • Supervise flight crew personnel
  • Conduct or supervise the training of flight crew and ground crew, responsible for the training schedule and record keeping of that training
  • Communicate safety and pilot navigation information to pilots as well as policy implementation or changes
  • Maintain proficiency as pilot in command
  • Exercise operational control
  • Measure aircrew performance and maintain safety standards
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Legally eligible for employment in the United States of America
  • Hold a valid driver’s license
  • Background check
  • Pass pre-employment and random drug screening tests
  • FAA First or Second Class Medical
  • Must meet the FAR Part 135.243(c) IFR requirements:
  • Commercial pilot certificate – Single-Engine Land
  • Instrument rating
  • At least 3 years within the last 6 years as PIC for Part 121 or Part 135
  • Hours
    • 2,000 hours total time
    • 1,000 hours helicopter PIC
    • 1,000 hours turbine time
    • 500 hours cross country
    • 100 hours night
    • 75 hours actual or simulated instrument time (50 hours in actual flight)

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors for extended periods of time
  • Comfortable working in various climates and weather conditions
  • Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift or carry 25lbs

  • Must be comfortable in making firm decisions relative to safety in all situations.
  • Good attention to detail is a must.
  • Basic computer skills required.
